Important Setup Notes:

  • This demonstration requires a supply of compressed air usually obtained from the [:RedWhiteGasCart: red and white gas carts].

Setup and Procedure:

  1. Place the apparatus on a tabletop.
  2. Connect the attached tube to a supply of compressed air. The supply will most likely come from the [:RedWhiteGasCart: red and white gas carts].

  3. Open the valve to let the compressed air into the apparatus.
  4. Grab hold of the rod sticking out of the air-bearing and give the bearing a spin. The bearing will nutate as it spins.

Cautions, Warnings, or Safety Concerns:

  • When connecting to the the compressed air supply in the [:RedWhiteGasCart: red and white gas carts], make sure you are using air and NOT the nearby (highly flammable) METHANE connection!

Discussion:

Discuss the physics behind the demonstration, explaining some of the various steps of the demonstration when appropriate.
