See Newport Isolator Manual, page 7
Or, as summarized in J.J. Weber Lab Notebook 10/18/10:
1. Walk laser to maximize signal through isolator in forward direction.
2. Rotate isolator to match input polarization--again look to maximize signal.
3. Rotate output polarizer only to maximize signal.
4. Reverse direction of isolator, sending light through backwards.
5. Put waveplate in before isolator; rotate the waveplate to get maximum output (to examine worse case extinction).
6. Rotate input polarizer of isolator (now on the "output" side because isolator is in backward) to minimize signal.
7. Again look at worse case scenario extinction by rotating the waveplate.
