Maxwell's Yo-Yo, 1M40.50
Topic and Concept:
Work and Energy, 1M40. Conservation of Energy
Location:
Cabinet: Mechanic (ME)
Bay: (A12)
Shelf: #2
Abstract:
A large disc is suspended from a small axle so the string unwinds on the way down and rewinds on the way up showing that rotational energy is conserved.

Setup and Procedure:
- Choose a yo-yo.
- Wind up the attached string around the small axle wedged between the two larger, outer discs.
- Put your index finger through the loop at the end of the string while holding the yo-yo in the opposite hand.
- When ready, keeping your hand with the looped over finger in place, let the yo-yo drop. As it drops, it will pick up rotational speed until all the string unwinds. Upon hitting this point, it will wind up again approaching your hand.
- If desired, repeat with other yo-yos.
Cautions, Warnings, or Safety Concerns:

Discussion:
Discuss the physics behind the demonstration, explaining some of the various steps of the demonstration when appropriate.
