Wrap a piece of paper around the end-to-end-jointed wood and metal rod. Place the junction in the flame of the burner. The part of the paper wrapped around the wood will be darker that that around the metal because the metal has more rapidly conduction the heat away than the wood. Wrap a sheet of paper around the brass tube and the joint between the wooden dowel rods and the brass tube. Place the junction in the flame.
