Description:

Thermal conduction demonstration that compares the thermal conductivity of metal and wood. Two wooden dowels and a brass tube, 5/4 inches in diameter. Each wooden dowel is inserted to the brass tube on both ends. Wrap a sheet of paper tightly around the brass tube and the inner part of wooden dowels near the brass tube.

Setup:

Note: Make sure that the red and white gas cart is in placed and connected to the utility trench gas line.

  1. Insert the wooden dowel rods into the brass tube on both side.
  2. Wrap a sheet of paper tightly around the brass tube and the inner part of wooden dowels near the brass tube and tape the paper by scotch tape.
  3. Connect the burner gas line to the red and white gas cart.

Cautions, Warnings, or Safety Concerns:

  1. Beware of hot frame.
  2. Demonstration may require practice.

Demonstration:

This demonstration shows thermal conduction properties of different materials. After setup, you have to carefully heat the paper along the wood/brass tube by holding it far enough from the flame so that the paper is not burned out. As the time goes by, you will see the the paper that wraped on the wooden dowel part is getting darker than that on the brass tube.
