Volta's Hailstorm 5B10.31

Hailstorm chamber located in Electrostatics Cabinet, A2.

Toepler-Holtz generator located in Electrostatics Cabinet, A3.

There should be a number of small metallized pith balls in the hailstorm chamber.

Discharge Toepler-Holtz generator: grasp insulating handles and put terminals (2cm diameter metal balls) in contact with each other.

Connect Toepler-Holtz to hailstorm chamber.

Separate the terminals of the Toepler-Holtz by 5 cm.

Crank Toepler-Holtz (there should be no sparking between the terminals). Pith balls should fly back and forth between top and bottom plate of hailstorm chamber.

Discharge Toepler-Holtz generator--you will likely see a fat spark between the two terminals as you do this. Do not put your hands near the terminals before you discharge them--the spark from the Toepler-Holtz can be painful.
