Helmholtz Coil, 5H10.30

Location:

helmholtzcoil.jpg Description:

This demonstration shows how a current induced magnetic field is much stronger than the natural magnetic field generated by the Earth.

Ingersoll Museum

Setup:

  1. No Setup Needed

Cautions, Warnings, or Safety Concerns:

  1. Exposed Wire

Demonstration: Two large loops of coiled wire are placed at a distance apart from each other with a compass placed in the middle. Current is than placed through the coils to generate a magnetic field. The strength and direction of the generated field can be observed by the deviation of the compass needle. This is to how that a artificial magnetic field can be much stronger than the earths natural magnetic field.
