Earthquake Simulator, 3A60.65
Location:
L.R. Ingersoll Museum of Physics
attachment:EarthquakeSimulator-1a.jpg
Description:
Acrylic box contains a city screen of buildings that are on spring and attached to a oscillating floor.
Cautions, Warnings, or Safety Concerns:
- Handle may brake if cranked too hard.
Demonstration:
By cranking the drive wheel, one makes the ground beneath the buildings to oscillate back and forth. This oscillation will translate to the buildings, thus making them oscillate too. The buildings will resonate at different speeds due to the size of the building which demonstration how buildings can react to an Earthquake and how driven mechanical resonances can be done.
