Important Setup Notes:

Setup:

  1. Set up the bridge, the hose and the lead bricks in such a way that the cart does not roll off the table. Make sure the open side of the bridge is the right distance from the edge of the table so that the trigger string can be released right before the ball goes under the bridge.
  2. Clamp the string to the lab bench.
  3. Load the ball into the launcher by pressing it down and placing the spring in the whole.
  4. Roll the cart under the bridge. It should be going relatively fast.

Cautions, Warnings, or Safety Concerns:

  1. The lead blocks weight about 32lbs. Take care no to drop them or strain yourself.
  2. Don't let the cart fall off of the lab bench, it is heavy.

Demonstration:

The cart rolls at constant velocity. It launches the ball, goes under the bride, and catches the ball. Because both the ball and the cart have constant velocity in the horizontal direction the ball will fall back into the launcher. Horizontal and vertical motion are independent.

References:

Use either an air hoses or a board and eraser as bumpers to prevent cart from falling of the bench.

PROCEDURE:

SETUP: Take the C-clamp with the release pin tied to it and clamp it to the side of the bench. Load the cannon by placing the steel ball in the cannon and push the ball down as far as you can. Then insert the release pin in to the small whole in the side of the cannon. The taller cart has two wholes, use the lower one. Roll the loaded cart out as far as the string will let you without releasing the pin. This gives you a distance guide, lets call it "L", to put the bridge. Place the bridge at a distance of 3/2L from the C-clamp, But no farther then 2L. Make sure the cart can go under the bridge without hitting the top of the bridge. Also make sure there is something to stop the cart on the other side of the bridge so that the cart does not fly off the bench. Use something like an air hose or 2 bar erasers and lead bricks.
