 1. Set up the bridge, the hose and the lead bricks in such a way that the cart does not roll off the table. Make sure the open side of the bridge is the right distance from the edge of the table so that the trigger string can be released right before the ball goes under the bridge.
 2. Clamp the string to the lab bench.
 3. Load the ball into the launcher by pressing it down and placing the spring in the whole.
 4. Roll the cart under the bridge. It should be going relatively fast.

The cart rolls at constant velocity. It launches the ball, goes under the bride, and catches the ball. Because both the ball and the cart have constant velocity in the horizontal direction the ball will fall back into the launcher. Horizontal and vertical motion are independent. Give the cart a good push. It takes practice to get the right speed so that the ball is in the air when the cart is under the bridge. After you push it, the cart rolls at constant velocity. It launches the ball, goes under the bridge, and catches the ball. The ball goes over the bridge and the cart goes under. Setup:

  1. Make sure that the lecture bench is level.
  2. Clamp the C-clamp with string and trigger pin to one end of the lecture bench.
  3. Set up the bridge. Make sure that the bridge is the right distance the cart with the trigger string fully extended. This distance is about 1 foot.

Cautions, Warnings, or Safety Concerns:

  1. The lead blocks weigh about 32lbs. Take care not to drop them or strain yourself.
  2. Don't let the cart fall off of the lecture bench; The alignment will get messed up.

Demonstration:

Give the cart a good push. It takes practice to get the right speed so that the ball is in the air when the cart is under the bridge. After you push it, the cart rolls at constant velocity. It launches the ball, goes under the bridge, and catches the ball. The ball goes over the bridge and the cart goes under. Because both the ball and the cart have constant velocity in the horizontal direction the ball will fall back into the launcher. Horizontal and vertical motion are independent.
