Block on a Rotating Table, 1D55.30

Topic and Concept:

An objects slides off a rotating turntable depending on the object's distance from the center of rotation or the rotational speed of the turntable.

Blocks, (Stoppers)

ME, Bay A9, Shelf #1

Important Setup Notes:

  • N/A

Setup and Procedure:

  1. Place the turntable on the lecture bench such that the table is horizontally oriented.
  2. Plug in the turntable making sure the power switch is in the "off" position.
  3. Turn on the turntable by flipping the switch to the "on" position.
  4. Place block(s) on turn table at versus radii until it flies off.
  5. Use a ceiling camera to display the turntable to the audience.

Cautions, Warnings, or Safety Concerns:

  • N/A

When the turntable moves, the only force on the blocks allowing them to move with the turntable is friction. As per Newton's first law, the blocks, once set in motion, "want" to travel in a straight line. To alter their motion and put them into a circular trajectory, a centripetal force must act on the blocks. However, at a curtain radius (or rotational speed) the frictional force is not enough to keep the block on the turntable so the block slides off nearly talent to the rotation.
