Important Setup Notes:

  • This demonstration may require practice.
  • This demonstration makes a lot of noise.

Setup and Procedure:

If using the disc:

  1. Set the disc on its edge.
  2. Give the disc a gentle push forward. The disc will soon start to fall in a circular path, making lots of noise.

If using the U-shaped metal sheet:

  1. Set the sheet so that it makes a vertical U-shape.
  2. Set the sheet into a rocking motion. This will show simple harmonic motion.
  3. Next, spin the the sheet around its vertical axis to show anharmonic motion.

Cautions, Warnings, or Safety Concerns:

  • The plates are heavy. Watch out for fingers and toes.

Discussion: The time for each of these objects to make one revolution around some center point decreases with time. Thus, no single frequency of oscillation can describe their motion. This is what makes these systems anharmonic oscillators.
